MEET KIRANMALA:INTERDIMENSIONAL DEMON SLAYER(Only she doesn't know it yet。)On the morning of her 12th birthday, Kiranmala is just a regular sixth grader living in Parsippany, New Jersey。。。until her parents mysteriously vanish and a drooling rakkhosh demon slams through her kitchen, determined to eat her alive。 Turns out there might be some truth to her parents' fantastical stories -- like how Kiranmala is a real Indian princess and how she comes from a secret place not of this world。To complicate matters, two crush-worthy princes ring her doorbell, insisting they've come to rescue her。 Suddenly, Kiran is swept into another dimension full of magic, winged horses, moving maps, and annoying, talking birds。 There she must solve riddles and battle demons all while avoiding the Serpent King of the underworld and the Rakkhoshi Queen in order to find her parents and basically save New Jersey, her entire world, and everything beyond it。。。

Middle school appropriate。 Fast paced with a fast talking action-oriented princess。 Some really great memorable characters (love Neel’s mother and grandmother!) and a wonderful vivid introduction to a new mythology for me。 Highly recommend for fans of The Lightning Thief。

3。5* A nice middle grade fantasy series with Indian mythology。 Kiran is like any other kid, she just wants to be accepted and be the same as everyone else。 But, her Indian parents are obviously different 。 For one thing, they insist that she's a real princess and to Kiran's mind, does everything to embarrass her。 But guess what? On her 12th birthday, she found out that her parents were not lying and she is a real princess, but of a different dimension's kingdom。 As with fantasies of this sort, w 3。5* A nice middle grade fantasy series with Indian mythology。 Kiran is like any other kid, she just wants to be accepted and be the same as everyone else。 But, her Indian parents are obviously different 。 For one thing, they insist that she's a real princess and to Kiran's mind, does everything to embarrass her。 But guess what? a unique book that incorporates Indian Folklore into an urban adventure story。 Sometimes it threw a whole lot of information at you really quickly and it took a minute to catch up。 Undecided if I will continue with the series。

This was a fun book to read。 The culture is clearly visible, and young adults will thrive within this fast paced storyline。 There is action from the first page till the very last page。 The imagery is fascinating。 I would love to see this book become a movie。 Thank you so much for sending this material to me by way of the Goodreads giveaways。 I can not wait yo read the next book。

This book was wonderful! I loved the main character and I loved all the Myths surrounding the story。 I loved reading a book where another culture is not only represented but really shown。 This is a great book for middle to higher grade readers。

I do not know much about Indian Mythology, but I thoroughly enjoyed what was in this book。 It took me a bit to get into Kiran’s character, but as the story continued, I grew to love her and this world so much。 This book had a significant amount of Indian Mythology mixed in with modern humor。 Learning about the mythological creatures I had never heard of before was neat。 This book is excellent for fans of Rick Riordan and other modern takes on Mythology。 The new dimension that Kiran goes to with I do not know much about Indian Mythology, but I thoroughly enjoyed what was in this book。 It took me a bit to get into Kiran’s character, but as the story continued, I grew to love her and this world so much。 This book had a significant amount of Indian Mythology mixed in with modern humor。 Learning about the mythological creatures I had never heard of before was neat。 This book is excellent for fans of Rick Riordan and other modern takes on Mythology。 The new dimension that Kiran goes to with the princes is intriguing, with the moving map, the winged horses, the Rakkhoshi, and the various kingdoms throughout。 My favorite character in the story was a talking bird named Tuntuni, who was the royal advisor to the king。 He was adorable, and I loved his sarcastic attitude throughout。 I hope that he will be in future books in the series。 Also, the inclusion of scientific elements such as astronomy were wonderful additions to the story as a whole, and I like that they were easy to understand。 I loved the world that she explored with the riddles and the rhyming。 It was so much fun。 I love the messages throughout this book, and I believe it would be great for any age。 This book shows the importance of family (both birth and adoptive)。 It had a lot of humor throughout, but the most crucial aspect of the book was the relationships, which were the heart of the story。 Sayantani also included a note at the end of the book where she discussed the cultural elements she used throughout and where she got her inspiration。 I’m glad that books are being published that tell these tales and give a voice to authors from many different cultures。 This book made me want to learn more about Indian Mythology and Bengali culture。 I especially loved the folktales that we got throughout。 I cannot wait for the rest of this series to see where Kiran, Keel, Tuntuni, and the rest of the gang go from here。 This book is an entertaining read that I recommend。 。。。more

Absolutely loved reading a Bengali author, and her homage to the rich Bengali literary traditions - can’t wait to read the rest of Kiranmala’s adventures! It was also incredibly refreshing to hear an audiobook read by the author, where every bit of Bengali was pronounced perfectly :)

I really enjoyed reading how the author adapted folktales and story collections for this book! It was cool to recognize some stories, and learn some new ones。

The writer is going for a witty, snarky, story style。 It falls flat in a lot of ways。 The story is fast paced, but the transitions are kind of rough。 The first half of the story is a pile of complication after complication which feels really a little jarring and makes the story feel unfocused。 It does cumulate in the climax and work together, but not enough to make up for the amount of time you feel lost in the middle。 The story has potential but definitely could have used a rewrite to buff out The writer is going for a witty, snarky, story style。 It falls flat in a lot of ways。 The story is fast paced, but the transitions are kind of rough。 The first half of the story is a pile of complication after complication which feels really a little jarring and makes the story feel unfocused。 It does cumulate in the climax and work together, but not enough to make up for the amount of time you feel lost in the middle。 The story has potential but definitely could have used a rewrite to buff out a few of the problems。 I am hopeful that the next book will be better just due to a more experienced author。 。。。more

"none of us is just one thing。 life is a process of learning to recognize our many faces。"i hate to say it, but this was such a disappointment。 honestly, this book very much felt like a first draft, and with the right editing, i think this could have been so much better。i thought the premise was interesting enough, but god, i just couldn't stop cringing during the first half of the book。 of course, that's probably my personal preference, but so many parts of this reminded me of an early 2000s er "none of us is just one thing。 life is a process of learning to recognize our many faces。"i hate to say it, but this was such a disappointment。 honestly, this book very much felt like a first draft, and with the right editing, i think this could have been so much better。i thought the premise was interesting enough, but god, i just couldn't stop cringing during the first half of the book。 of course, that's probably my personal preference, but so many parts of this reminded me of an early 2000s era ya fantasy novel with some things slightly altered for a middle grade audience。 the second half did pick up though, and as soon as the quest started, it was much easier to breeze through this。kiranmala was interesting enough, but as a main character, she needed so much more depth。 she felt very two dimensional, if i'm being honest, and i don't think her personality was very clearly defined。 the two princes, neel and lal, also felt a bit stereotypical, but neel at least had a little bit of depth。 the author tried to add some angst between kiran and neel, but it felt far too forced, and only succeeded in casting kiran in a worse light。 i think my favorite character was the talking bird, lmao。with that being said, i adored the bengali rep and the cover is absolutely gorgeous!⪼ 2。5 stars。------this gives off major aru shah vibes and i'm so excited! 。。。more

This was a fun save-the-parents adventure full of rhyming monsters and silly side characters。 Our main character is a tween with an attitude who's dealing with embarrassment about her immigrant parents, and I loved how the story handled these feelings without talking down to kids in the same situation。 It was goofy and adventurous and voicey, but I think a bit too young for me at this point。 I would have totally loved it when I was around the protagonists' age, though! I also knocked off another star because the main character made some pop culture references that briefly threw me out of the story, just because I was thinking "Is she old enough to even know what that is?"The audiobook narration (done by the author) was FANTASTIC, by the way! All the characters had distinct voices and ways of speaking, so it was a joy to listen to。 Definitely recommend! 。。。more

The book was alright。 I knew it was a middle school level fantasy fiction when I picked one but I just wanted a light read for once。 Having said that, the book lacked depth in my opinion, both with the characters and the plot。 Kiranmala, a teen girl from New Jersey, regular being called princess by her parents gets a sudden shock in her life when her parents go missing。 She eventually finds her way into another universe where she goes in search of her parents with a certain few people who were w The book was alright。 I knew it was a middle school level fantasy fiction when I picked one but I just wanted a light read for once。 Having said that, the book lacked depth in my opinion, both with the characters and the plot。 Kiranmala, a teen girl from New Jersey, regular being called princess by her parents gets a sudden shock in her life when her parents go missing。 She eventually finds her way into another universe where she goes in search of her parents with a certain few people who were willing to help。 It's not a very long book but it still fell short of being a page turner but again I don't want to go any deeper with the review on this as this is clearly meant to be a light YA fantasy fiction book。 I'll still read up the other books in the series with the hope of a stronger storyline at least。 。。。more

Eh。 Honesty it was an okay book, but fiction and fantasy aren’t my things。 There was so many extra things there like her and the princes love, or the talking bird, to where I was dreading reading it and was having trouble staying focused on what I was reading。 Wouldn’t read again, but would recommend if you like fantasy。

A very fun read。 Up-beat with plenty of humor to balance all the mortal danger。Enjoyed the Indian fairy tales represented here。 A little weird at the end, trying to explain worldview stuff。 But overall a happy ending, so I was satisfied。

Starts off a bit too slow for my taste, but got much much better after the halfway point。 It has messages about listening to your parents and accepting being bicultural/Indian diaspora。 It also has strong nods towards the immigration process being bs (which yeah, it is)。 And it has a girl AND a boy as the damsels in distress! It is very much inspired by Bengali stories and myths (if you're not familiar with these, like me, the inspirations are all listed and explained in the afterword)。 I listen Starts off a bit too slow for my taste, but got much much better after the halfway point。 It has messages about listening to your parents and accepting being bicultural/Indian diaspora。 It also has strong nods towards the immigration process being bs (which yeah, it is)。 And it has a girl AND a boy as the damsels in distress!
